Authoring Quality and Affordable Course Materials with Soomo

Overview of Soomo Learning Environment and Course Analytics http://soomopublishing.com/

The Soomo Learning Environment (SLE) greatly simplifies the process of:

  • Gathering many learning resources (from OER to traditional textbooks) into a single online home
  • Wrapping static content with various means for students to respond
  • Generating analytics data on exactly what students are doing and learning.

Gathering Multiple Resources

It is typical for one course to employ a traditional textbook, articles from your library, some Open Education Resources and a few other websites. The Soomo Learning Environment gives you a single place to combine all these resources and wrap them with interactivity. Your Soomo Course Builders will work with you to license content as needed, host what needs to be hosted, build single sign on to content behind firewalls and place the content or links to the content together, as needed, for each assignment .

 Wrapping with Interactivity

Most digital content from publishers is static but with the Soomo Learning Environment you can add questions and other interactive elements. By asking students to respond to reading and videos, you increase how many students do the homework and what they get out of it. Short answer, multiple choice, discussion boards, essay writing, blogging, graphing, solving and so on are all possible ways for students to move from just reading to doing, exploring, applying and engaging the topics. Generating Course Analytics Unlike most other analytics, these data focus on student action and achievement in a specific course. Because we play host to learning interactions, these data can give instructors a single dashboard in which to see:

  • How is this particular student doing? At a glance tell me how much time she’s spent on this assignment, which assignments she’s done and how complete is each assignment?
  • Who’s been inactive lately? (Early intervention is key to increasing retention.)
  • Which assignments are most often not completed by my students? Which questions and concepts are most often missed?
  • What learning outcomes are being achieved? On which learning outcomes are we improving?
